Shediac, Friday, July 3, 2026 - The Maritime Fishermen's Union (MFU) welcomes today's announcement from Fisheries and Oceans Canada, which increases access to both Atlantic mackerel and Southern Gulf of St. Lawrence fall herring.
“The increase in the Atlantic mackerel TAC to 1,500 tonnes, including 1,400 tonnes for bait, and the increase in the Southern Gulf fall herring TAC to 15,500 tonnes from 8,500 tonnes are important steps toward improving access to important fish resources in a time of growing economic stress for our fishermen,” explains Martin Mallet, Executive Director of the MFU.
These decisions recognize not only the latest scientific and fishermen's knowledge advice, but also the socioeconomic importance of these fisheries to thousands of fish harvesters. For several years, the MFU has consistently advocated for a more balanced fisheries management approach, one that protects fish stocks while also recognizing the realities facing fishing families and coastal economies.
While there is still work ahead to ensure long-term, sustainable access to mackerel and herring fisheries, today's announcement represents meaningful progress and is welcome news for MFU members.
“We are happy to see that Minister Joanne Thompson and DFO officials are listening to industry concerns and acting on both the science and the needs of our communities. Reaching this balance is vital for our industry and for the survival of our coastal regions,” concludes Mallet.
