The MFU welcomes DFO's decision on the retention of striped bass bycatch

Shediac, June 23, 2025 – The Maritime Fishermen's Union (MFU) is very pleased with Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson's decision to allow gaspareau fishermen in eastern New Brunswick to retain a portion of the striped bass that ends up in their nets.

"This is good news. It will allow the department to gather more data on the species. We will also continue to work with DFO to ensure that sound management practices are put in place for the coming years that will also allow our members to continue to practice their trade," explains MFU President Réjean Comeau.

Opening up to market development

Gaspareau fishermen can now keep a maximum of 500 striped bass measuring between 50 and 65 cm in a single day until the end of the current season (approximately one week).

Some fish markets in the eastern part of the province are already offering their customers fresh striped bass caught locally. For MFU members, it is exciting to see markets opening up quickly for this fishery. “With management methods that take into account all parties and environmental realities, it is possible to allow commercial striped bass fishing for our coastal fishermen and First Nations, and to maintain recreational fishing while keeping the biomass healthy. Striped bass is an excellent fish and a resource that should be enjoyed by as many people as possible,” adds the UPM president.

A new era in relations with DFO

The MFU is pleased with how quickly the Carney government responded to the fishermen's call on this issue.

"This decision is the first by the new federal government in response to our requests. We hope it is a sign that the Minister of Fisheries and the new Prime Minister are listening and ready to work with us to ensure the health and sustainability of coastal fisheries and our communities. We have many other issues that require immediate attention. For the first time in a long time, we are hopeful that we will have genuine collaboration with our federal elected officials," concludes Réjean Comeau.
