The MFU needs your support, by signing this petition, to urge with one common voice that DFO act now to reduce and manage the population of striped bass in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) refuses to consider the MFU’s recommendations regarding the striped bass population of the southern gulf of St. Lawrence.

The Maritime Fishermen’s Union (MFU) recommendations:

-            To reinstate the retention of striped bass as by-catch in the gaspereau, eel and smelt fisheries.

-            To allow the retention of striped bass as by-catch in lobster and Atlantic halibut fisheries.

-            To reinstate an October 15th opening for fall open water smelt box net fishery.

-            To give a commercial quota to the members of the MFU.

-            Re-evaluate the reference points taking into account the carrying capacity of the Miramichi River ecosystem.

-            To extend the science research to other rivers, the marine environment and to include multi-species interactions.

The MFU needs your support, by signing this petition, to urge with one common voice that DFO act now to reduce and manage the population of striped bass in the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence.
